Paid AuD Externship
July 9, 2026
The team at Southwestern Hearing & Balance Center have served the health needs of Santa Fe and the communities of northern New Mexico since 1986. As a physician-owned hearing center, our audiologists partner closely with CHRISTUS St. Vincent ENT and Santa Fe Ear Nose & Throat to provide our patients with the best care possible. We remain the only medically-based audiology and hearing aid practice in Santa Fe.
We are excited to offer an immediate opportunity for two doctoral audiology students to join the team at SWHB for the 2027–2028 externship year. This unique training experience provides the opportunity to work closely with both audiologists and physicians in a collaborative, patient-centered environment dedicated to delivering exceptional care.
SWHB fosters a supportive culture that encourages learning, welcomes innovative ideas, and values the contributions of every team member. Externs will gain comprehensive clinical experience while working alongside experienced professionals committed to mentorship and professional growth.
The student will work on a team responsible for administering a full range of diagnostic services, including ABR, OAE, VNG, ECOG, VEMPs, Epley, and adult/pediatric hearing evaluations. There will also be opportunities to dispense hearing aids, as well as take part in consultations, fittings, verification, counseling and community outreach.
Our goal is for each audiology extern to gain meaningful, real-world clinical experience serving patients across the lifespan while providing comprehensive audiologic care under the supervision of ASHA-certified and state-licensed audiologists. Through progressive clinical responsibilities, mentorship, and hands-on training, externs will develop the knowledge, skills, and professional confidence necessary to become competent and independent Doctors of Audiology.
Skills the student is expected to develop and demonstrate:
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and evaluations.
- Independently manage a full clinical caseload, including diagnostic evaluations and hearing aid services.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with physicians, audiologists and interdisciplinary team members.
- Perform diagnostic audiologic evaluations and develop appropriate differential diagnoses.
- Complete hearing aid fittings, verification, counseling, and follow-up care.
- Provide patient-centered counseling and education to patients and their families.
- Prepare accurate, concise, and professional clinical reports and documentation.
- Collaborate effectively as a member of the SWHB team while demonstrating professionalism and accountability.
This is a full-time, paid position with a salary of $40,000, eligible for health insurance, paid time off and company holidays.
